Overview

This is the second part of this session, where Jaime Bowman will dive further into educational trauma and how we can work to minimize it in our teaching.

Educational trauma is defined as shame and humiliation in the learning environment stemming from both the learner’s prior experiences and the nature of the learning environment itself. Learn about this form of trauma, the effects it has on learning, what materializes in the classroom or bedside, and strategies for interrupting, recovering from, and preventing this type of trauma. Both trauma informed and transformative learning approaches will be utilized in interactive, small group activities.

The WSU Faculty Development Unit of the Office for Faculty Affairs and Continuing Professional Development designs and delivers up-to-date content in medical education topics for clinicians who have trainees in structured environments. The aim of these sessions is to promote active learning and engagement, fostering a community of faculty as educators, and improving the overall health of our patients and communities.

Objectives
At the conclusion of this activity, learners will be able to:

  1. Demonstrate implementation of best practices pedagogy in structured/classroom environments.
  2. Recognize and connect them to resources to support and help.
  3. Demonstrate methods for assessing learners in structured/classroom environments.
  4. To increase the awareness of educational trauma.
  5. Describe ways to readjust your teaching style to minimize.

Accreditation

This activity has been planned and implemented in accordance with the accreditation requirements of the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) Medicine. The Elson S. Floyd College of Medicine is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) to provide continuing medical education for physicians.
