Overview

This learning activity consists of three (3) 45-minute zoom-based sessions and will take place in September, 2024: Sept 5, Sept 12, and Sept 19, 1:00-1:45PM. The content was designed specifically for primary care providers participating in the INTACT study, part of WSU IREACH. Please contact the INTACT study team for zoom connection details.

The curriculum is based on the University of Washington Cognition in Primary Care Program which has already been tested in many clinics and with hundreds of primary care providers who found it both accessible and very useful. The curriculum, specifically designed to be implemented in American Indian-Alaska Native serving primary care settings, features primary care provider training in screening, diagnosis, and follow-up care for mild cognitive impairment and Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias.

Objectives
At the conclusion of this activity, learners will be able to:

  1. Screen for reversible causes of cognitive impairment.
  2. Assess cognitive function in the primary care setting.
  3. Incorporate observer input to make a diagnosis of cognitive impairment.
  4. Discuss a diagnosis of mild cognitive impairment vs. dementia with patients.
  5. Identify when and how to make a referral to a dementia specialist.
  6. Prescribe medications to treat cognitive decline in someone with dementia.
  7. Use both non-pharmacological and pharmacological approaches for severe agitation.
  8. Identify high value tools to assist with advance care planning for dementia.

This activity has been planned and implemented in accordance with the accreditation requirements and policies of the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME).
