Overview

This session, presented by Dr. Sheila Rauch from Emory University School of Medicine, will focus on describing how these issues present together and how they may impact treatment and long-term outcomes. Finally, we will describe promising new directions in intervention that are being examined. Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and chronic pain are highly co-morbid with estimates suggesting that roughly 20% of those with one of these conditions may also have the other (Siqveland et al., 2017). Research suggests chronic pain and PTSD may develop from some of the same neurobiological risk factors and involve similar brain structures and functions (Martucci & Mackey, 2018; Rauch et al., 2015). For those suffering with both chronic pain and PTSD, the severity of impairment is magnified, and treatment is most successful when both issues are recognized to maximize benefit (Rauch et al., 2021).

This is a series of livestreamed webinars and on-demand online courses to meet the need for current pain management education that focuses on integrative evidence-based approaches and risk reduction for person-centered care. Both pharmacologic and non-pharmacologic approaches will be highlighted with experts representing a variety of health and therapeutic professions.

For more information about this session, please register here. For questions, please contact [email protected].

  2. Evaluate how PTSD and its treatment can impact the experience of chronic pain during treatment and after.
