Overview
As a newer medical school, WSU has had the opportunity to build a career advising program as we progress rather than trying to build in career advising to an existing program. Along the way we have experienced many challenges- our inaugural class was severely impacted by pandemic restrictions, and we have not yet had an application cycle without dramatic changes to the application process. Through it all, we recognize the importance that both formal and informal advising plays in the career decisions of out students. This session will outline the formal career advising process for students at WSU, discuss how informal advising can affect students’ decisions, and identify common misconceptions and biases that may impact a student’s decision making process.

Objectives
At the conclusion of this activity, learners will be able to:

  1. Explain the WSU College of Medicine career advising model
  2. Identify personal medical career selection biases
  3. Identify students' career selection biases
  4. Develop tools to discuss biases in medical career choice

Accreditation
This activity has been planned and implemented in accordance with the accreditation requirements and policies of the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME). The Washington State University (WSU) Elson S. Floyd College of Medicine is accredited by the ACCME to provide continuing medical education for physicians. The WSU Elson S. Floyd College of Medicine designates this activity for a maximum of 1 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits TM. Participants should claim only the credit commensurate with the extend of their participation in the activity.
