Overview

This workshop will equip educators to create high-impact, system-based review sessions for MS-2 students entering their final pre-clerkship term.

Faculty will learn strategies for using a question-driven, discussion-rich format to integrate basic science and clinical reasoning, reinforce high-yield concepts, and model effective exam-taking approaches.

Through hands-on practice, participants will design a 90-minute session built around 10–15 board-style questions, structured to maximize engagement, retrieval practice, cross-disciplinary connections, and learner confidence as students transition toward Step 1 preparation and clerkship readiness.

Objectives
At the conclusion of this activity, learners will be able to:

  1. Outline historic USMLE Step 1 performance at WSU and compare local trends with national averages to contextualize the need for high-yield, board-style review sessions.
  2. Identify key evidence from the medical education literature supporting the use of faculty-modeled MCQ reasoning in pre-clerkship teaching.
  3. Explain the theoretical frameworks—such as retrieval practice, cognitive load theory, and worked examples that underpin the effectiveness of polling and faculty-guided MCQ practice.
  4. Develop and deliver a standardized, high-yield 80-minute review session by selecting high-quality NBME-style questions from UWorld, creating one-slide explanation decks, and facilitating active learning through polling, retrieval practice, and structured question debriefing.
