Overview

Quality improvement (QI) and design thinking (DT) are methods for complex problem-solving that are often taught and practiced separately, with QI more commonly used in healthcare. In this session, Virginia Waldrop, MD will share how she and a colleague built an integrated "human-centered QI" curriculum for residents, drawing on Crowe and colleagues' 2022 framework for leveraging design in QI (BMJ Qual Saf). Participants will use journey mapping — a design thinking tool — to explore a shared workflow challenge and leave with practical ideas for bringing human-centered QI methods into their own teaching and improvement work.

Faculty Advancing Medical Education in Residency (FAMER) is a series developed by WSU Graduate Medical Education programs and the Office for Faculty Affairs and Continuing Professional Development. The program is designed to deliver up-to-date content in medical education topics for practitioners working with residents. The aim of these sessions is to promote active learning and engagement, fostering a community of faculty as educators, and improve the overall health of our patients and communities.

Objectives
At the conclusion of this activity, learners will be able to:

  1. Compare the strengths and limitations of quality improvement and design thinking as methods for complex problem-solving in healthcare.
  2. Use journey mapping to explore a clinical or educational workflow from the user's perspective.
  3. Identify one workflow or experience in their own teaching or improvement work where human-centered QI methods could be useful.

Accreditation

The Washington State University (WSU) Elson S. Floyd College of Medicine is accredited by the ACCME to provide continuing medical education for physicians.

The WSU Elson S. Floyd College of Medicine designates this Live Activity for a maximum of 0.75 AMA PRA Category 1 Credit™. Participants should claim only the credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.
