Overview
In 2021, the University of Colorado School of Medicine underwent a curriculum transformation including the implementation of a Longitudinal Integrated Clerkship model of training for all 195 second year medical students.  As part of this undertaking, Kaiser Permanente Colorado participated as a LIC site for 15 medical students.  KPCO is a community-based, integrated healthcare delivery system that provides health insurance and clinical care for over 500,000 members. While teaching medical students was common, the LIC model was new as students were integrated as members of the healthcare teams across multiple specialties and domains of care within the organization over a year, rather than the more familiar single specialty block rotations.   Over 150 volunteer clinicians were recruited as preceptors, teaching faculty for didactics or sponsors for student projects.
Organizational buy-in came to the forefront as the most critical aspect of program development. Creating a culture whereby all participants (students and preceptors) felt valued became central to process implementation and influenced attitudes, beliefs, and team building.  Balancing the relationship with the School of Medicine and the healthcare system to mitigate competing demands is a critical component to the successful launch of an LIC outside an academic medical center (AMC).

This workshop will allow participants to brainstorm on how to create culture, engage stakeholders, maintain the mission of the core institution, navigate relationships with a partner AMC, and simultaneously remain devoted to teaching and the students best interests.  The discussion will include learnings and reflections from the inaugural year.

The WSU Elson S. Floyd College of Medicine will host the 2023 Consortium of Longitudinal Integrated Clerkships (CLIC) conference in Spokane, Washington, USA with the conference theme: Beyond Barriers: The Value Proposition of LICs, the 2023 CLIC conference will include plenaries, small group discussions, debates, posters, and workshops to foster constructive discussion and inspire potential solutions to the logistical and financial challenges inherent in medical education. We aim to encourage networking and problem-solving in an era of increasing stress for both health professionals and health systems. The 2023 CLIC Conference will be primarily in-person with some sessions available online (for a reduced registration fee).

Objectives
At the conclusion of this activity, learners will be able to:

  1. Define the basic principles that guide development of LICs
  2. Compare and contrast the challenges and opportunities of constructing curriculum for LICs
  3. Describe and differentiate longitudinal student assessment models
  4. Discuss program evaluation for LICs
  5. Discuss research evidence that LICs improve student outcomes
  6. Delineate strategies to successfully integrate a LIC within a healthcare delivery system including the importance of creating partnerships between an AMC, healthcare systems and a community hospital
  7. Identify strategies to build a culture of engagement in an LIC where students, preceptors and faculty feel valued
  8. Strategize about potential barriers to success and identify adaptive processes to mitigate challenges specific to developing and implementing a community based LIC
