Overview

How do we learn to think like doctors? The cognitive processes of collecting and analyzing clinical information in order to arrive at an accurate diagnosis seem intuitive to some, opaque to others, and can be difficult to describe or teach even for the most seasoned physicians. In this session we will review current theory about diagnostic reasoning, break it down into its constituent elements, and introduce multiple strategies for teaching diagnostic reasoning on the fly in the inpatient or outpatient setting.

The Graduate Medical Education programs and Office of Faculty Development design and deliver up-to-date content in medical education topics for practitioners working with residents. The aim of these sessions is to promote active learning and engagement, fostering a community of faculty as educators, and improving the overall health of our patients and communities.

Objectives
At the conclusion of this activity, learners will be able to:

  1. Demonstrate methods for effectively teaching learners in a variety of clinical environments.
  2. Demonstrate methods for assessing learners in a variety of clinical environments.
  3. Define “diagnostic reasoning” and describe its role in patient care.
  4. Identify the stepwise elements of the diagnostic reasoning process.
  5. Practice real-time strategies for teaching diagnostic reasoning in a clinical environment for learners of different levels.
