Clinical practice guidelines (CPGs) are essential tools for translating scientific evidence into high-quality care, but the field of youth gender medicine has yet to fully realize their potential. This course equips participants with the skills to critically evaluate treatment guidelines and their role in shaping care for gender-dysphoric youth. Through an in-depth analysis of two prominent CPGs, this course highlights the challenges and opportunities in promoting evidence-based, ethical, and effective care. Learn how rigorous guideline development can address clinical uncertainties and improve outcomes for young patients, ensuring a more informed and balanced approach to their care.

About the Speakers

Ivan Florez MD, PhD (Colombia) is the leader of the AGREE Collaboration for the evaluation of practice guidelines, director of Cochrane Colombia, a practicing pediatrician and associate professor of Health Research Methodology at McMaster University.

Susan Bewley MD PhD (U.K.) is Emeritus Professor (Honorary), King’s College London Department of Obstetrics & Women’s Health. Dr. Bewley has established many innovative services and authored over 400 publications and edited seven books. She has participated in, and chaired, many guideline development groups (NICE, MAGICApp, WHO) and recently chaired the charity HealthSense-U.K. which campaigns “for science and integrity in healthcare.” She was the cofounder Chair of GLADD (the LGBT+ Association of Doctors and Dentists in the U.K.) and has published original research in gender medicine.

Will Malone MD (U.S.) is a board-certified endocrinologist and founding board member of the Society for Evidence-Based Gender Medicine. He is a graduate of Stanford University and New York University Medical School. He completed a residency in Internal Medicine and fellowship in Endocrinology, Diabetes, and Metabolism at Los Angeles County/University of Southern California Medical Center. He has been in clinical practice since 2008 and is Assistant Clinical Professor of Endocrinology at the Idaho College of Osteopathic Medicine.

Series Overview

Recent research has prompted significant shifts in international consensus on safe and effective care for gender-dysphoric youth. This CME series is led by prominent clinical experts and researchers specializing in pediatric gender medicine and related fields. It presents perspectives, research, and clinical experience primarily from Western European countries, providing clinicians with guidance on the benefits, risks, and ethical implications of medical interventions for gender-dysphoric and gender-questioning youth. The series aims to support informed clinical decision-making that prioritizes patient safety and informed consent.

Objectives
At the conclusion of this activity, learners will be able to:

  1. Differentiate trustworthy guidelines from less credible treatment recommendations.
  2. Recognize how the AGREE II framework can help evaluate the trustworthiness of treatment guidelines.
  3. Evaluate the strengths and limitations of several well-known treatment guidelines for gender dysphoria.
