Overview

Teaching medical professionalism is a fundamental component of medical education, but many programs lag behind in explicitly supporting professional identity formation. The transformation from lay person to "acting, feeling and being a doctor" is different for each trainee and dissonance in the identity of the learner and the perceived identity of the profession can lead to frustration and isolation. This session hopes to introduce the idea of professional identity formation, explore the process including socialization and communities of practice, and propose potential ways to integrate professional identity formation as an educational objective in your interactions with learners.

Objectives
At the conclusion of this activity, learners will be able to:

  1. Understand the difference between professionalism and professional identity formation.
  2. Explore how initial experiences in medical school may influence learner paradigms that can help medical school and residency educators approach different types of learners.
  3. Understand the process of socialization and the multiple factors impacting that process.
  4. Explore how professional identity formation as an educational objective can be addressed during different parts of training.

Accreditation

This activity has been planned and implemented in accordance with the accreditation requirements and policies of the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME). The Washington State University (WSU) Elson S. Floyd College of Medicine is accredited by the ACCME to provide continuing medical education for physicians.
