With an overall lifetime risk of 1 in 400 Americans, almost all healthcare professionals will care for persons with ALS during their career. While a cure for ALS is still elusive, there are many treatments that are known to improve both quantity and quality of life for persons with ALS. This presentation reviews the currently available disease-modifying therapies for ALS, as well as details on most common secondary symptoms and best practices in symptom management and multidisciplinary care.

To begin this course, make sure you are logged in to CloudCME and then select the Register button above.

This is the 2nd course in a 7 course series. The courses are designed to be taken in order.

Course 3: Advances in ALS Biology and Therapy
Course 4: Respiratory Care of Individuals with ALS

The Steve Gleason Institute for Neuroscience is for patients and their families, and scientists, clinicians and educators who work together to improve quality of life for those with neurodegenerative disease. Ours is an environment for not only the patient, but for all of those whose lives are affected by these diseases – helping them navigate the many challenges they face. The talents of a diverse group of individuals and the way they are united toward common goals truly make us special. Integrating the three disciplines of clinical care, research and adaptive technology fosters the development of new technologies and treatments to improve the quality of life for those with neurodegenerative diseases and provide education and support for their caregivers and family.

The purpose of our continuing education series is to answer questions from gaps identified from both patients and families, as well as providers who are seeking not only answers to clinical questions, but patients and caregivers looking for well-informed, caring and empathetic practitioners. Our series will start with the basics on neurogenerative disease states such as ALS and others, discuss the issues of ableism and the effects this may have on patients and their care givers, and then continue to explore topics around adaptive technology, medications, care and well-being, and other topics identified by patients and providers.

Objectives
At the conclusion of this activity, learners will be able to:

  1. Name the 3 available disease modifying therapies currently approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for ALS.
  2. List the top three secondary symptoms persons with ALS endorse following diagnosis.
  3. Describe the benefits of multidisciplinary specialty care for persons with ALS.
