This course examines the evolving concept of what it means to be transgender as a young person in the 21st century through social and cultural lenses, focusing on the interaction between comorbidities and gender dysphoria, as well as current therapeutic approaches for addressing gender-related distress. Participants will explore how shifting definitions of youth transgender identity intersect with broader psychological, developmental, and societal factors in youth. Through the testimonies of clinicians currently in practice, participants will learn about complexities of differential diagnosis and how therapeutic approaches aim to address these challenges.

About the Panelists

Erica Anderson, PhD (U.S.) is a clinical psychologist with extensive experience in working with transgender individuals and their families. She is a recognized expert in gender identity development and has contributed significantly to advancing culturally competent care in this field.

Alexander Korte, MD (Germany) is a psychiatrist specializing in child and adolescent psychiatry and psychotherapy. He is a Senior Consultant at the Clinic for Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, Psychosomatics and Psychotherapy, Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität Munich.

Paul Garcia-Ryan, LCSW (US) is a psychotherapist in private practice with a clinical focus on trauma, dissociation, and identity development. He is the Executive Director of Therapy First, a non-profit professional association of over 300 mental health providers worldwide who view psychotherapy as the appropriate first-line treatment for gender dysphoria.

Sasha Ayad, LPC M Ed (U.S.) is a licensed professional counselor and one of the first clinicians in the US to draw attention to the unprecedented rise of trans identities among previously gender-normative youths. Since 2016, she has worked with hundreds of gender diverse youths and their families.

Samuel Veissière, PhD (France, Canada) is an anthropologist, clinician, and behavioral consultant working at the intersection of psychiatry, cognitive science, and social sciences. His work combines ethnographic, experimental, clinical, evolutionary, contemplative, and psychoanalytic perspectives on human cognition, consciousness, sociality, and mental health.

Kristopher Kaliebe, MD (U.S.) is a Professor of psychiatry at University of South Florida, in Tampa, Florida. Dr. Kaliebe is Board certified in Psychiatry, Child and Adolescent Psychiatry and Forensic Psychiatry. He is a distinguished fellow of the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry (AACAP).

Jamie Reed (US) is one of the first public whistleblowers from a pediatric gender clinic in the United States. She is the Executive Director and Co-Founder of the LGB Courage Coalition, an American-based nonprofit seeking to reform youth gender medicine. She holds a Master of Science in Clinical Research from Washington University in St. Louis.

Series Overview

Recent research has prompted significant shifts in international consensus on safe and effective care for gender-dysphoric youth. This CME series is led by prominent clinical experts and researchers specializing in pediatric gender medicine and related fields. It presents perspectives, research, and clinical experience primarily from Western European countries, providing clinicians with guidance on the benefits, risks, and ethical implications of medical interventions for gender-dysphoric and gender-questioning youth. The series aims to support informed clinical decision-making that prioritizes patient safety and informed consent.

Objectives
At the conclusion of this activity, learners will be able to:

  1. Recognize how clinicians have observed the concept of “transgender” has altered over time.
  2. Examine how comorbidities interact with gender dysphoria and transgender identification for some patients.
  3. Describe current therapeutic approaches for gender distress or dysphoria.

This course includes one video (35 minutes) and one post-test.

Completion of the post-test is required to receive AMA PRA Category 1TM credit and for MOC credit to be reported to the American Board of Pediatrics. A minimum pass rate of 75% applies. Learners have unlimited attempts to meet the pass rate threshold.
